The Beovox Cona is one of Bang & Olufsen's most celebrated design objects — and one of the most significant. Designed by David Lewis in 1988, it was B&O's first subwoofer loudspeaker, and it has been part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent Architecture and Design collection in New York since 1993. The MoMA acquisition places it alongside the most important industrial design objects of the twentieth century — a recognition that the Cona is not merely a loudspeaker, but a considered sculptural form that follows function with rare clarity. The rounded disc form of the Cona is not arbitrary. By eliminating parallel internal surfaces, the circular ABS cabinet avoids the resonances and standing waves that affect conventional rectangular enclosures — a principle shared with the Beovox Penta and other B&O loudspeakers of the era. Inside, a single 20.5cm (8″) driver is wound with a special dual voice coil that sums the left and right channels magnetically before reproducing them as a single bass signal. Since the human ear cannot determine the direction of low frequencies, only one Cona is needed for a complete stereo installation, and it can be placed freely anywhere in the room. No dedicated subwoofer amplifier is required — the Cona wires in series between the amplifier and the satellite speakers, drawing its power from the amplifier output and passing the mid and high frequencies through to the mains.
This example is in great overall condition. There are some light marks on the left edge, clearly visible in the listing images — cosmetic only and consistent with the age of the piece. A highly collectible piece of design history that also functions as a genuine musical subwoofer.

Compatibility note: The Cona is a passive device and requires a reasonably powerful amplifier for best results. It connects via standard speaker terminals between the amplifier and satellite speakers. It is compatible with any passive speaker system, not only B&O — the amplifier simply needs enough output to drive both the Cona and the satellites simultaneously. Its satellite partners at B&O were the Beovox CX50 and CX100, but it pairs well with any compact passive loudspeakers.
