BeoVerse Comparison Guide

BeoLab 18 vs BeoLab 28
B&O Floor-Standers: The Established Classic vs The Modern Flagship

The BeoLab 18 defined a generation of B&O loudspeakers. The BeoLab 28 represents everything that came after. Here's how they compare.

The BeoLab 18 arrived in 2014 as one of Bang & Olufsen's most elegant and capable floor-standing speakers — a slim, beautifully finished tower that became a staple of high-end B&O home cinema and music setups around the world. It remains in active use in thousands of homes today and continues to appear regularly on the pre-owned market.

The BeoLab 28 launched in 2021 and represents a generational leap in B&O loudspeaker technology — introducing Beam Width Control and wireless connectivity that the BeoLab 18 simply does not have. The question for buyers today is whether that technology gap justifies the substantial price difference.

What the BeoLab 28 Has That the 18 Doesn't

Beam Width Control

This is the single most significant technology difference. The BeoLab 28's Beam Width Control allows you to actively shape the speaker's dispersion pattern — narrow for a focused stereo image in a listening chair, wide for filling a room when entertaining. The BeoLab 18 has no such capability; its dispersion is fixed. In practice, Beam Width Control transforms how you use a speaker across different activities and room configurations.

Wireless Connectivity

The BeoLab 18 connects via Power Link — a wired connection to B&O source equipment such as televisions and older Beosound systems. While Power Link remains excellent for what it does, it means the BeoLab 18 cannot stream wirelessly from Spotify, TIDAL, or other services independently. The BeoLab 28 is fully wireless, integrating into the modern Mozart platform with Wi-Fi streaming, Beolink Multiroom, and WiSA.

Active Room Compensation

Both speakers adjust their output based on room placement, but the BeoLab 28 uses a microphone-based measurement process to calibrate more precisely to your specific room. The BeoLab 18 uses a simpler placement switch (floor-standing, near wall, etc.) that works well but doesn't match the BeoLab 28's sophistication.

"Pre-owned BeoLab 18s represent one of the best value propositions in the B&O world. You get a genuinely beautiful, powerfully built floor-standing speaker for a fraction of the BeoLab 28's price — the trade-off is wired-only operation and no Beam Width Control."
When the BeoLab 18 Still Makes Sense

The BeoLab 18 remains a compelling choice in several scenarios. If you have an existing B&O television setup using Power Link, the BeoLab 18 integrates seamlessly and continues to deliver exceptional sound. Its build quality and driver design are such that its performance remains competitive even a decade after launch. And on the pre-owned market, exemplary pairs can be found at prices that make them extraordinary value.

Who Should Choose Which?
Choose the BeoLab 18 if…

You want classic B&O performance at pre-owned prices

An existing Power Link B&O setup, or a budget that makes the BeoLab 28 untenable. Pre-owned BeoLab 18s in excellent condition are a superb buy and remain one of B&O's most elegant designs.

Choose the BeoLab 28 if…

You want modern wireless and Beam Width Control

A new or recently built system, wireless-first streaming, and the ability to shape your speaker's dispersion to suit the moment. The BeoLab 28 is the better long-term investment at current new prices.

BeoVerse Verdict

Pre-owned BeoLab 18 or new BeoLab 28 — both are exceptional. Choose based on budget and connectivity needs.

The technology gap is real, but so is the price gap. A pre-owned BeoLab 18 in excellent condition, combined with a modern B&O TV or streamer, delivers an experience that many audiophiles find entirely satisfying. The BeoLab 28 is simply in a different era of technology. BeoVerse regularly stocks both.
