The BeoLab 5 — The Icon

The BeoLab 5 is arguably the most famous Bang & Olufsen loudspeaker ever made. Designed in 2002 by industrial designer David Lewis and acoustic engineer Mads Kogsgaard Hansen, it introduced the Acoustic Lens — an omnidirectional high-frequency dispersion system that fires sound upward and outward in a 180° arc. Combined with an Adaptive Bass System that automatically adjusts bass output based on room acoustics, the BeoLab 5 was genuinely years ahead of its time.

At 2,500W of total amplification, it remains one of the most powerful domestic loudspeakers ever built. In a large room, properly positioned, it is still among the finest listening experiences you can have in the B&O world.

"The BeoLab 5 is to Bang & Olufsen what the Porsche 911 is to sports cars — iconic, endlessly capable, and still making newer designs look ordinary."
The BeoLab 9 — The Elegant Minimalist

Where the BeoLab 5 is dramatic, the BeoLab 9 is refined. A slim, rectangular tower with a clean aluminium finish, it was designed to disappear visually while delivering powerful, articulate sound. At 1,000W, it has less raw power than the BeoLab 5 or 20, but its two-way design with a large 8-inch woofer delivers strong bass and excellent midrange clarity.

The BeoLab 9 works exceptionally well in smaller to medium rooms and suits buyers who want B&O floor-standing performance without the visual drama of the BeoLab 5. It connects via Power Link only — no wireless capability.

The BeoLab 20 — The Modern Classic

The BeoLab 20 bridges the gap between the BeoLab 5 era and the modern wireless B&O world. It retains the Acoustic Lens from the BeoLab 5, delivering that signature omnidirectional high-frequency dispersion, while adding WiSA wireless connectivity — making it the only one of the three that can function as a wireless speaker in a modern setup without being wired to a B&O source device via Power Link.

With 1,680W and twin 10-inch woofers, the BeoLab 20 is a physically imposing speaker with genuinely large-room capability. Its oval, wide form factor means it needs a room to match.

Who Should Choose Which?
BeoLab 5

For: The serious B&O collector

The BeoLab 5 is for those who want an iconic piece of audio history and a listening experience that remains world-class. Requires a dedicated, properly sized room and ideally a B&O source device for full functionality.

BeoLab 9

For: Elegant, lower-profile performance

The most visually understated of the three. Well suited to medium-sized rooms where the BeoLab 5 or 20 would be overkill. Excellent value on the pre-owned market.

BeoLab 20

For: Wireless flexibility in a large room

The only option with WiSA wireless, making it compatible with modern wireless home cinema setups. For large rooms where the Acoustic Lens's dispersal works best. The most modern of the three architecturally.

BeoVerse Verdict

Each is a masterpiece in its own right. Your choice depends on room, budget, and connectivity needs.

If you can live with Power Link wiring and have the room for it, the BeoLab 5 is the most extraordinary listening experience of the three — and one of the finest speakers ever produced at any price. The BeoLab 20 is the best choice for modern wireless setups. The BeoLab 9 is the most practical and accessible of the three.
